Located on the north shore, Westleigh Wonder seamlessly blends natural charm with urban Surrandin.

The interiors of Westleigh Wonder have a soothing palette of soft, bright blue and white tones throughout every space, creating a serene ambience and clean, inviting spaces to live in. 

In the heart of the house, the kitchen emerged as a culinary haven. Mediterranean graphic blue and grey tiles adorned the walls and floor, adding a vibrant touch, while the sleek gold accents on tapware and handles added a dash of glamour.

The study, decked in luxurious teal carpet with a velvety texture, became an inviting sanctuary for work and relaxation.

Large windows frame panoramic views of the city, bathing the house in natural light and merging the coastal-like design with the urban landscape just beyond the walls.

During the initial assessment of the property, the architects were faced with a significant challenge. The external balcony structure was at a higher level than the internal space, resulting in an unexpected step up in the newly defined internal area. To overcome this challenge, the architects installed a new floor internally, effectively concealing the step-up in the building. This decision achieved a seamless level from the kitchen to the living area and enhanced the space's functionality, transforming what could have been perceived as a design flaw into a functional enhancement.

The transformation of Westleigh Wonder was not merely a visual spectacle but a meticulous blend of form and function. The existing building's low ceiling heights demanded an alternative performance solution. The architects navigated these constraints with finesse, ensuring that the design not only met but exceeded the residents' expectations.




Westleigh Wonder prioritised practicality, ensuring that every corner served a purpose and enhancing the quality of everyday living. Every room and every detail echoes the architects' dedication to creating a space where form harmoniously dances with function.

The completion of Westleigh Wonder stands as a testament to the architects' ingenuity. They overcame unexpected challenges and transformed them into opportunities for innovation, and the result is beautiful, as is the client's vision.

Westleigh Wonder

The Jacaranda Terrace, Paddington

The renovation was a part of a two-storey terrace house in Paddington. When renovating the bathroom, we aimed to utilise the space to create a modern layout with soft geometric shapes. We embraced the use of monochromic notions by including dark fixtures and accessories to create an edgy, sophisticated look. We ensured that an abundance of natural light was incorporated to provide a great source of visibility to the area and ventilation to improve airflow. 

The new rear roof extension fills the existing space with natural light and ventilation—an excellent conversion of an unused room. The brief was to create a well-lit and cozy kids' bedroom in the unused, inaccessible attic space. We designed it in a way to fit an ensuite and walk-in wardrobe. Adding one traditional dormer to the front and a rear roof extension transformed the space into a bright and fun room.

The Jacaranda Terrace

The Ribbon House, Randwicku

The initial client brief presented a clear directive to renovate the kitchen, laundry, and bathroom of a 1930s house, while preserving the property's authentic characteristics and infusing a modern aesthetic. As a family of four, they sought to fashion an expansive living area with a seamless connection between the kitchen and dining sections, conducive to hosting guests and providing easy access to the rear outdoor space. Our design ethos revolved around the client's lifestyle requirements, and we actively solicited their input throughout the process.
Given the existing small kitchen dimensions and the laundry and toilet's inconvenient placement at the rear of the property, the new kitchen's orientation and layout were optimized to maximize functionality and facilitate social interaction around a spacious island while also providing a view of the backyard. The installation of a large window above the sink ensured that natural light and ventilation were in abundance. The kitchen's aesthetic was carefully crafted to exude sophistication, with dark blue and grey cabinetry, an Olympia Quartzite Honed Block benchtop and waterproof splash back, and satin brass diamond-textured handles. The strategically placed pendants above the kitchen island serve a dual purpose: they highlight specific areas with a warm glow and add to the overall visual appeal as a decorative architectural element. To create a striking contrast with the original timber floor. A grey Pandomo levelling compound floor was added. 

As the brief grew, the client decided to also renovate the existing bathroom and master ensuite for the first floor with a new contemporary design by maintaining the original stained glass windows. We retained the original features of the house.
The existing staircase created an enclosed feeling at the front of the entrance of the house with poor natural lighting. The new staircase we designed was a response to create a warmer, grand entrance to the house. This became a prominent feature of the house with a skylight and pendant for dramatic lighting. Using natural and artificial light was central to the design process; positioning the statement pendant and skylight above the staircase created a bright entrance. The handrail on the staircase featured geometric shapes to remind the original art deco style in a more contemporary way. Being transparent in form allows more light to flow through the space.
We used various unique materials throughout the property, including waterproof wallpaper in the wet areas, to create something out of the ordinary. Using reflective materials gave us different perceptions of other parts of the property with different views. For example, you can see the bamboo outside while standing in the kitchen. We kept the stained glass doors in the home to keep a balance between the traditional aspects and the new modern ones. We brightened the home using colours and retained the existing brick fireplace by modernising it.

The renovation of this 1930s property's kitchen was a careful balance between preserving the original character and creating a modern and functional space suitable for a family of four who loves to entertain. The elegant finishes and the contrasting modern Pandomo floor add a touch of sophistication and style to this beautiful kitchen, making it a standout feature of the home. Overall, we were thrilled to work with the client and bring their vision to life, creating a space that met their needs and expectations.

The Ribbon House, Randwick

Lions court, Erskineville

The narrow and long site of a one-level, two-bedroom, one-bathroom terrace house in Erskineville presented constraints that needed to be addressed in its redesign to transform it into a three-bedroom, two-bathroom two-story home. The new design includes a U-shaped kitchen that maximizes the use of benchtop space while also serving as a breakfast table or socializing area with the addition of two stools. The kitchen joinery extends to the underside of the new timber stairs, creating a seamless and multifunctional piece that includes cabinetries, a sink, a dishwasher, a fridge, laundry, and storage. A small timber shelf library wall links the kitchen and the corridor, serving both functional and aesthetic purposes to match the timber of the feature stairs. 

The smoked mirror splash back adds reflections and depth to the area and allows reflection to the rear modern garden. While every piece of joinery has been designed cleverly to maximize every usable corner and provide ample storage. A small window framed by the joinery for storage has been added in the corner of the kitchen to increase light and ventilation. The kitchen is illuminated with a combination of natural and artificial lighting that enhances the overall ambiance of the space. Large windows in the living area flood the room with natural light, creating a bright and inviting atmosphere. Overhead lighting fixtures provide additional illumination, ensuring the space is always well-lit and functional.
The centerpiece of the kitchen is the Quantum Quartz benchtop in concrete matte, a premium engineered stone material that offers excellent durability and resistance to stains and scratches. The benchtop provides a seamless and elegant surface that is perfect for food preparation and entertaining. The sage green cabinetry, together with timber shelves, adds a fresh and vibrant element, creating a natural and earthy feel. The cabinets are made from high-quality materials and are designed to provide ample storage. The sleek and contemporary design of the cabinetry complements the smooth and polished surface of the Quantum Quartz benchtop, creating a stunning contrast.
To maintain the same level as the existing floor, a leveling compound Pandomo floor from Ardex has been used for the new rear extension, creating a modern and functional finish that complements the original front part of the terrace house.
Overall, this design is a perfect example of how a well-planned, executed space, can transform a home and enhance its overall value.

The Soffio, Vaucluse apartment

The renovation of this apartment in Vaucluse showcases a modern and stylish architectural design.
The objective was to reconfigure the layout to create a functional three-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment with an open-plan kitchen, living, and dining.

The project aimed to maximize the potential of the existing footprint and comply with the constraints of the pre-existing perimeter walls in the apartment complex. The new design focused on relocating the kitchen and dining area close to the balcony, where the majority of ventilation and light was coming in, creating a seamless flow between the rooms. The master bedroom has been relocated where the original kitchen was.
Relocating the living where one of the original bedrooms was and connecting with the kitchen and dining in an open space provided the new space with cross ventilation and more natural light.
The renovation fulfilled all the client’s requirements, including a large kitchen, interconnected living spaces, and improved circulation, without compromising on space or functionality. The new design is proof of meticulous attention to detail, from the lighting fixtures sourced from Italy to the custom fittings and features such as the wallpaper and suspended range hood over the island bench. This unique blend of colours and materials exudes a warm and inviting ambiance.

The open-plan living room and kitchen area are the heart of the apartment, creating a seamless flow and connection. The kitchen, which serves as the hub of the space, is designed with practicality and ease of use in mind, featuring bronze and silver cabinetry that infuses a vibrant burst of color. The curved contemporary island bench provides ample workspace for cooking and entertaining, while the pendant range hood adds a touch of style. The Corian benchtop creates a seamless and modern look. It is made from a blend of natural minerals, making it an ideal surface for preparing and cooking, as it is easy to clean and maintain. 

This spectacular renovation has significantly elevated the apartment's value, producing a unique space. The resulting atmosphere is one of sophistication and refinement, a bespoke and captivating space that embodies elegance and creativity. 

The design and reconfiguration of the apartment promoted cross-flow ventilation through the living, dining, and kitchen spaces which effectively reduced the need for air-conditioning, thus having big cost savings for the client.

Renderings / Coogee

The project has two interesting roof forms. The first is a curved gable form that tapers at the apex to create a softer profile to the streetscape. The second is a sweeping skillion form that runs with the slope of the site; the roof was designed to minimize the visual bulk impact of the form from the street below and to maintain the views of the properties behind.
The roof forms required meticulous and iterative testing to arrive at the final design, the intricacies of the roof forms and the detail of junctions between them are essential to achieving the proposed form. As such, achieving accuracy and a high level of articulation of the roof forms is essential during the construction process.
The site is steep and sandy, which creates a challenging set of conditions when developing a terraced building form that sits on the site. Extensive excavation and site reinforcement through the piling and shoring walls are crucial to the construction phase to protect the neighbouring sites.

One of the most considerable design challenges was incorporating all member's briefs into this 10-bedroom design to ensure that the project could satisfy the client's requirement as a multi-generational home. The scale and form of the building needed to be sympathetic to the surrounding heritage items whilst also presenting itself as a contemporary piece of architecture that could sit proudly beside the established architecture perched above the park.

The curved glazed courtyard is a dominant feature of the interior of the project. Running from the basement (as a lightwell) through all four levels, the courtyard ensures equal solar distribution throughout the dwelling whilst providing extensive cross ventilation. The scale and complexity of the curved glazing system creates a significant challenge for planning and construction, despite this we are certain that the challenge will be justified by the result.

Bespoke Home Renderings / Coogee

Heritage Terrace, Lavender Bay

The Lavender Bay 1880s terrace house is located in a conservation area, and the idea was to maintain and reinstate the original heritage features of the home while keeping the configuration. We used a variety of different materials and design to do this throughout the home. Nathalie Scipioni Architects supported the client through the entire process of her renovation, from concept, approval, CA, and heritage. We designed the home to suit the client’s lifestyle.
We reinstated the features from the front façade by painting it and restoring it. We replaced the carpet in the home with new floorboards and kept the original staircase while adding a new handrail on them.
The ground floor had no internal bathroom or laundry accessible inside the property, it was only accessible from the outside courtyard. We designed a new laundry and bathroom on the ground floor. We wanted to create more natural light within the home, and we did this by adding large open doors on the ground floor towards the courtyard and putting in skylights on the top floor.

Rose Bay Apartment

The brief from the client was to transform an unrenovated three bedroom, 1 bathroom apartment on the top floor of an apartment building in Rose Bay to maximise its value.

Their goal was to 'flip' the property, and it modernised and ready for sale within 12 weeks.

Our proposal was to modernise the unit for an open-plan design. We achieved this by creating a design that would unlock the properties potential, managing construction to the clients deadline and providing interior styling so the property was looking its best.

Stanmore House

This house is located on a narrow block in the inner west of Sydney, set beneath a row of a fig trees to the north that filter the light. The original house was cramped and dark, the low ridge line prohibited any light entering beyond the adjacent canopy.

The design brief was to create a light, open space that responded to the green character of the site and celebrated the filtered light. The narrow site dictated the restrained palette, materiality was kept to a minimum with moments of stark contrast highlighting the length of the site and creating a visual break. A light well and a partially obscured high window draw in light from above the parallel canopy to flood the space with natural light, stark white ceilings and walls disperse the light throughout.

The unconventional roof and ceiling forms produce different spatial arrangements within a single area; creating the sense of a larger, more dynamic space. The roof form is extruded beyond the building as a perforated screen, cut to mimic the light as it penetrates through the trees. The light dances across the room, responding to the sun, wind and trees to enhance the relationship between inside and out.


AWARD WINNER | The Terrace House

The Courtyard House

The renovation was committed to preserving and integrating the existing cottage into the contemporary extension. This was achieved through the retention of traditional elements, such as the original stove that has been carved into the modern bathroom as a reminder of the properties history. The counterbalanced roof form of the pavilion was determined by the offset hipped roofs on the front facade to reinforce the relationship throughout the dwelling. 

The brief called for a light and open space that contrasted the defined boundaries of the original dwelling. An emphasis on transparency and openness informed the design of the rear boundary that benefits from the interplay of light reflecting from the pool. The light-well has been positioned to frame the existing jacaranda tree. Internally, a bespoke kitchen with a casual dining table integrated into the bench top encourages congregation and socialisation.

Lilyfield Renovation

The rear addition to a turn of the century workers cottage in Lilyfield embraces natural lighting and open space with a clever layout which allows for 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, kitchen, living and study. The design embraces and restores where possible the remaining period features while respectfully contrasting these with a palette of new building materials, techniques and colours. 

Striking turquoise blue Pandomo flooring throughout the hallway and living spaces creates a bold yet calming statement. The timber and glass staircase acts as a sculptural element within the living room, skilfully dividing living from dining whilst still providing a visual link between the two.

The living opens up through large bi-fold doors to an outdoor entertaining deck and backyard allowing for ample natural ventilation and light.

Masonic Hall

The Masonic Hall in Balmain is a stunning example of heritage architecture, showcasing the beauty and elegance of traditional brickwork. This iconic building has recently undergone a meticulous renovation, which has carefully preserved and restored its original character.

The exterior of the Masonic Hall is a testament to the enduring quality of brickwork, The building's façade exudes an air of timeless elegance, inviting visitors to step inside and experience the grandeur of the space within. Inside, the Masonic Hall is a marvel of heritage design, with its soaring ceilings, and intricately carved timber detailing all lovingly restored to their former glory. The Masonic Hall in Balmain is a true treasure of Sydney's architecture.

Paddington Renovation

Building Designers Australia NSW Design Awards 2011                                                                                                                                                          Winner – Outdoor Spaces

The project allowed us to reconsider the potential of a compact outdoor space, by dismissing the typical planar typology of terrace gardens. Instead, we opted to integrate a series of tiered platforms that engulfed a hidden garage. The platforms allow for the delineation of spaces for different functions, the garden was separated into a place to sit, play and eat. The simple concepts were derived from an ongoing discussions with the clients about how they wanted to utilize the garden.

The space is grounded by the timber, stone and water features that are offset by a striking metallic screen and warm metallic lighting creating a Balinese styed escape, in the heart of Sydney.

Rozelle Renovation 2

"We hired Nathalie to redesign the rear section of our home, a semidetached Victorian residence. The project involved the demolition of kitchen, bathroom, laundry and living which was replaced by a two story addition of kitchen, bathroom (x2), bedroom, laundry and living. Nathalie's beautiful design ideas and collaborative approach resulted in a bright, stylish, spacious home. We engaged Nathalie to project manage the build which was the best decision. Nathalie's attention to detail, knowledge of product and design, and determination to achieve the best result for us, never waned. When we were exhausted, struggling to make decisions at the end, Nathalie was always there for us. I would not hesitate in recommending Nathalie and her team." 


Rozelle Extension & New First Floor Addition

Paddington Contemporary House

The original owner of this single story terrace in Paddington lived here for 40 years. It was sold in an untouched condition to a property developer.

The developer approached us initially with the intention of knocking down and rebuilding the property. However, this wasn’t going to be possible because the terrace was located in a conservation area.

Instead, on our advice, the developer opted to seek a DA to extensively renovate the property and to add a first-floor addition. Our brief for the design was to maximise the space on what was a very small site.

Our design created a modernised four bedroom home with a new kitchen and new dining and living areas.We included features such as a Juliet balcony on the rear of the property and small windows to be sympathetic to the conservation area.
The first floor extension (a master bedroom and ensuite) presented a design challenge. Council required the first floor addition not to be visible from the street. We ensured the property kept its single storey facade as well as being in character with the Paddington area. The DA was approved.

The developer sold the property with the newly approved DA to a private owner who purchased the property to live in.

Working with the new owner, we modified our original design with council approval to create the unique features she wanted in her new home.
One of the bedrooms was transformed into a spacious dining area and we designed a bigger kitchen space.

Our client was thrilled with the amount of space we could achieve, how the property exactly suited the way she wanted to live in it, and the amount of natural light filtering through skylights throughout the home.


Kingsford

This stunning renovation in Kingsford has transformed the home's exterior, enhancing its street appeal and creating an inviting oasis for all to enjoy. The sparkling pool in the backyard is the perfect complement to the modern and stylish updates throughout the interior.

This master bedroom renovation is the epitome of luxury and style, with a walk-in wardrobe and open ensuite that are both functional and beautiful. The open-plan design allows for a seamless flow between the different areas of the room, creating a relaxing and welcoming space to unwind in.

The walk-in wardrobe is custom-designed  with ample hanging space, drawers, and shelving for shoes and accessories. The wardrobe is also designed to complement the overall aesthetic of the room, with high-quality finishes and stylish details.The ensuite in the master bedroom is an oasis of calm, with an open design that seamlessly connects to the bedroom. The bathtub is the centerpiece of the space. The shower is also custom-designed to provide a spa-like experience, with high-end fixtures and finishes that create a luxurious atmosphere.

The living area is now the heart of the home, with an open-plan design and abundant natural light creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The new staircase is a standout feature, with modern lines and high-quality materials elevating this space to new heights.

Luxury Contemporary

NSStudio was approached by a couple with significant experience as building developers to sub divide an existing lot and design two standalone dwellings. The site is north facing, yet narrow; the clients engaged NSStudio to ensure that both properties received ample natural light throughout both dwellings. The brief and site required intelligent planning to maximise sun penetration and flexible living.The design mediated the desire to deliver a high-end light-filled dwelling with the need to stay within the clients set budget for the project.

The project unfolded as a collaboration between the studio and the clients which was an important element of the relationship with the developers who require a degree of control and connection to the project throughout. The outcome was a tremendous success spatially and financially, the clients have since directed additional projects to NSStudio as they want to ensure each new project can achieve the same quality.

Luxury Contemporary / Leichhardt

Croydon Renovation

This home renovation involved the demolition of an existing cottage extension at the rear that was built in the 60s to propose a new spacious contemporary modern extension. Our client wanted their renovated home to be light and open space, in contrast to their original cottage which was dark and gloomy. 

To enhance the space, we provided a high ceiling for the full width of the extension, provided a large open sliding door opening out to the back yard, hand-selected materials and finishes such as timber, concrete and black finishes. This created contrast and depth giving the client a dramatic experience of the space. We integrated a large cantilevered roof which provided shading during summer and did not comprise the view to the yard with columns. The new bathroom and laundry rooms finishes were selected to create a theme of warmth and subtlety in the space. 


Inner West Extension

The Kalgoorlie Contemporary / Leichhardt

Rozelle Renovation with Pool

The significant rear addition to an existing brick single storey dwelling in Rozelle draws inspiration from the area’s industrial past to create an attractive modern family home. The project resulted in the entire renovation of the existing dwelling as well as the construction of a new kitchen and living area downstairs, with upstairs containing a mezzanine, bedroom, master bedroom, ensuite and walk in robe. 

The use of a laser cut screen over skylight in the stairwell creates visual interest, with a continual change of pattern cast upon the stairs throughout the day. The use of laser cut screening continues to the outdoor area where it provides privacy and protection from the sun. 

A palette of polished concrete, black aluminum framed windows and deep blue kitchen create a modern interior which contrasts with the warmth of the spotted gum flooring and careful renovation of the existing dwelling, creating a contemporary family home.

Rear Addition / Rozelle

Rozelle Terrace

This was a small project with a big impact. By extending the ground plate out from the existing structure, into the rear garden and side passageway the downstairs kitchen could be opened up and flooded with light by running skylights around the perimeter of the existing structure. The success of the project is measured in the transformation of occupancy and utilization of the new kitchen/living/study space, the clients have remarked that it has become the hub of the home.

The relationship with the clients was essential to achieving the strikingly unique outcome with a rich palette of materials and finishes. A desire to avoid any surfaces that are hard underfoot lead us on an investigation for alternative soft flooring, finally we settled on cork for its durability, finish and diverse color choices. A restrained palette of blue, white and timber keeps the space visually balanced whilst avoiding glare and celebrating the material finishes. 

Inner west Terrace

Wareemba Renovation

The existing house had belonged to the client's parents. The property had not been updated since the 1960's, the interior was dark and closed off. The renovation created an open plan living area that connected the living, dining and kitchen to the views of Canada Bay.

The goal of the interior design was to open up the living area, creating a connection to Canada Bay throughout the property. The existing property was dark and claustrophobic, the design was focused on creating an open plan environment that was befitting of the homes sentimental value and natural surrounds. The neutral palette in the living room, coupled with the bold black structure of the windows frames the view of Canada Bay. The neutral colour scheme is broken up with rich, warm elements; the use of copper in the kitchen, lighting and furniture ensures the space is a warm and inviting place for a family. The bathrooms in the renovation have received strikingly different treatments, the ground floor bathroom is finished in dramatic graphic tiles that are offset by the neutral vanity. The first floor bathroom features a palette of concrete and timber, the materials create a sense of warmth and comfort.


Darling Point Apartment

The Darling Point apartment began with the amalgamation of two smaller apartments, both of which were outdated and failed to take advantage of the surrounding view. The result was a light filled apartment with 270 degree views of the harbour, two bedrooms, two studies and three bathrooms with a generous open plan living area. 

The  bold design is a reflection of the owners striking art and furniture collection. The living area is neutral with splashes of colour to link the art and furniture to the architecture. The bathrooms and dressing rooms incorporate a palette of blue and green that are influenced by the views of the harbour. 

Balmain Renovation

A first floor addition to a late 1800’s sandstone workers cottage in Balmain drew its concept from the notion of transition and movement. The addition is focused around a staircase which transcends from the ground floor to the master bedroom and ensuite above. The action of moving up and down this staircase is celebrated with a large expanse of glass facing the courtyard and living room beyond.

The concept of transition, not only limited to the transition between floors is represented by the movement of shadows cast through laser cut privacy awnings and skylights. This ethereal experience changes time of the day and the seasons, providing a sense of ever changing delight. Consisting of a new master bedroom, ensuite and walk in robe located on the first floor, the new addition captures view of the North Sydney skyline. Using a palate of new materials, including terracotta external tiles on the stairwell, the addition provides a pleasing contrast between new and old, respecting the heritage of the existing cottage.

The Sandstone Cottage

Birchgrove Renovation

The Birchgrove Renovation called for a complete redesign of the rear of the dwelling. The existing lean-to kitchen was demolished and replaced with a light-filled kitchen/dining area with bedrooms and living above.
The modern materials contrast with the existing building to create a strong distinction between new and old.
