Crown Contemporary, Surry Hills (Heritage Conservation Area)

For this Victorian terrace in the heart of Surry Hills, our clients wanted to celebrate the character of the existing home while introducing a much stronger sense of their own style. With a love of industrial design, they were drawn to darker finishes, raw textures and metallic details, giving us a clear direction for the transformation.

Throughout the interiors, we introduced a rich palette of bronze and metallic tones, balanced with more understated finishes to create a home that feels contemporary and full of personality without losing the warmth and character of the original terrace. Industrial-inspired elements, clean lines and darker detailing run throughout the design, creating a consistent language between old and new.

A part of the project was creating a new granny flat at the rear of the property. Rather than treating it as a completely separate addition, we carried the same industrial influence through to the new space, creating a strong relationship between the existing terrace and the contemporary addition.

As the property sits within a Heritage Conservation Area, every intervention needed to carefully consider the heritage context of the site. We worked within these requirements while still finding opportunities to give the home a distinctive identity that reflected our clients.

For us, this project is a great example of how working within a Heritage Conservation Area doesn’t mean a home has to feel traditional. With the right balance, heritage and contemporary design can sit comfortably together, allowing the history of the home to remain while still creating something personal, bold and completely suited to the people living there.
